11. Reading: English Around the World
Read the passage and answer the questions:
English is spoken by approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide, making it the most widely used language in the world. However, only about 375 million people speak English as their first language (native speakers). The rest speak it as a second or foreign language.
English has many varieties around the world. British English, American English, and Australian English are well-known varieties. In addition, many countries in Asia and Africa have developed their own varieties, such as Indian English, Singapore English, and Nigerian English. Each variety has its own unique accent, vocabulary, and sometimes grammar.
Today, English serves as a global lingua franca in business, science, aviation, and the internet. It connects people from different cultures and helps them communicate with each other.
