Useful expressions:
Asking for clarification:
- Could you repeat that, please?
- What do you mean by ...?
- Sorry, I didn't catch that.
- Could you speak more slowly?
Talking about language differences:
- In British English, we say ... but in American English, they say ...
- That word means something different in my country.
- The pronunciation is different in Australian English.
- We use different vocabulary for the same thing.
2Role-play: Cross-cultural communication
Scenario: You are at an international conference. Work with a partner. One person is from the UK and the other is from the US. Discuss the differences you notice in vocabulary and pronunciation.
Key questions to discuss:
- What words do you use differently?
- How do you pronounce certain words?
- Have you ever misunderstood someone from a different English-speaking country?
