Getting Started - World Englishes

11. Listen and Read

Dialogue:

Nam: Hi, Mark. I heard you've just come back from Singapore.

Mark: Yes, I had a great time there. People speak Singlish – Singaporean English.

Nam: Really? Can you understand them?

Mark: At first it was a bit difficult because they mix English with Chinese and Malay words. But after a few days, I got used to it.

Nam: That's interesting. I know that English varies across countries. British English, American English, Australian English...

Mark: Exactly! There are many varieties, which we call World Englishes. Each has its own accent, vocabulary, and sometimes grammar.

Nam: Do you think it matters which variety we learn?

Mark: Not really. The most important thing is that we can communicate with other English speakers around the world. English is a global lingua franca now.
