11. Listening: Lifestyle changes in a family

Pre-listening: How do you think your grandparents' life was different from yours?

Listen to a passage about a Vietnamese grandmother talking about lifestyle changes and answer the questions.

Listening passage:

My name is Mrs. Hoa. I am 75 years old. When I was young, I lived in a small village in the countryside. Life was very different. My family grew rice and vegetables. We had no electricity, so we used oil lamps. I walked three kilometres to school every day.

Now my children and grandchildren live in Ha Noi. They enjoy modern life with television, smartphones, and cars. They rarely eat traditional home-cooked meals. Instead, they order food online. My grandson spends hours playing video games. I enjoy visiting them, but I miss the peaceful life in the countryside.

I think some changes are good, but we should not forget our traditions. I still teach my grandchildren how to make banh chung at Tet and how to sing folk songs.

33. Writing: A paragraph about lifestyle changes

Body 1: PastDescribe how people lived in the past (where, transportation, work, entertainment)
Body 2: PresentDescribe how people live now (modern conveniences, changes)
Concluding sentenceYour opinion: what is good, what should be preserved

Sample paragraph:

Vietnamese lifestyles have changed significantly over the past 50 years. In the past, most people lived in the countryside and worked as farmers. Life was simple and peaceful. People used bicycles or walked to travel. For entertainment, they enjoyed folk games and traditional festivals.

Today, many people live in modern cities. They work in offices or factories. They use cars and motorbikes to get around. Young people enjoy surfing the internet, playing video games, and shopping online.

In my opinion, modern life offers many conveniences, but we should not forget our traditions. We need to preserve our cultural heritage while enjoying the benefits of modern life.
