Skills 1 - Reading & Speaking: Changing Vietnamese Family Structure
11. Reading Passage: Family Structure Then and Now
Over the past few decades, family life in Viet Nam has undergone significant changes. In the past, extended families were very common. Three or four generations—grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren—lived under the same roof, sharing household work, meals, and decision-making.
Today, as urbanization accelerates and young people move to big cities for education and careers, nuclear families have become the dominant family model. Small apartments in high-rise buildings have replaced traditional courtyard houses.
Despite these physical changes, core family values such as filial piety, respect for elders, and mutual support during festivals remain strong in Vietnamese culture.
