11. Reading Passage: Life in Duong Lam Ancient Village
Duong Lam is one of the oldest ancient villages in Viet Nam, located in Son Tay town, Ha Noi. The village is famous for its ancient laterite brick houses, communal house, and deep-rooted traditions that have been preserved for centuries.
Fifty years ago, life in Duong Lam was very quiet. Villagers earned their living mainly through agricultural farming and making traditional soy sauce (tương). There was no electricity or piped water, so villagers collected water from communal wells. Despite hard physical work, villagers maintained close-knit community relationships.
Today, while modern conveniences have arrived, the villagers still cherish their heritage and welcome visitors from around the world to discover Viet Nam's historical roots.
