11. Useful Expressions

Asking for directions:

  • Excuse me, where is the ...?
  • Can you tell me the way to ...?
  • How can I get to ...?
  • Is it far from here?
  • Which way is the ...?

Giving directions:

  • Go straight (ahead).
  • Turn left / right.
  • It's on your left / right.
  • It's opposite / next to / between ...
  • Take the first / second turning.

22. Model Conversation

A: Asking for directions to the museum

Tourist: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the museum?

Local: Sure! Go straight along this street. Then take the second turning on the left. The museum is on your right, opposite the post office.

Tourist: Is it far from here?

Local: No, it's about 10 minutes' walk.

Tourist: Is there a bus I can take?

Local: Yes, bus number 12 goes there. The bus stop is in front of the supermarket.

Tourist: Thank you very much!

Local: Not at all!

33. Speaking Practice

Practice with a partner:

Student A: You are at the park. Ask for directions to:

  • The bank (go straight, turn right, opposite the pharmacy)

Student B: Give directions using the information above.

Then switch roles. Student B asks for directions to the cinema (go straight, turn left, next to the restaurant).
