At a careers session, school-leavers compare academic study, vocational training and apprenticeships. Their adviser does not rank one route as best for everyone. Instead, she asks students to identify their interests, learning preferences and long-term aims. A practical course may include substantial workshop experience, while an academic programme may place greater emphasis on theory and research. However, course names alone are not enough to make a decision. Students should check entry requirements, costs, assessment methods and progression opportunities with the institution. Having prepared a list of questions, Linh attends an open day and takes notes. She later compares the answers with information from another provider. Her decision becomes clearer because she uses specific evidence rather than pressure from friends.
