A future neighbourhood is being discussed at a student design workshop. One group proposes sensors that help street lights respond to activity. Another wants shaded walking paths and frequent buses. During the discussion, a student asks who will use each service. A digital travel app may help many passengers, but people without smartphones still need clear signs and printed information. The group also considers privacy: collecting information is not the same as having permission to use it for every purpose. Finally, the students revise their model. They keep useful technology but add benches, accessible pavements and a public noticeboard. Their plan treats a smart city as a place that supports different residents, rather than simply a place with many connected devices.
