22. Reading Text: Marie Curie - A Pioneer in Science
Marie Curie was born Maria Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867. From an early age, she showed exceptional intelligence and a passion for learning. However, as a woman in 19th-century Poland, she faced significant barriers to higher education. Universities did not accept female students, so Marie had to pursue her dreams elsewhere.
In 1891, at the age of 24, Marie moved to Paris to study physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne University. Life was difficult for her. She lived in a tiny, cold attic room and often went hungry to save money for books and tuition. Despite these hardships, she excelled in her studies and graduated at the top of her class.
In Paris, Marie met Pierre Curie, a French physicist who shared her passion for science. They married in 1895 and began working together on groundbreaking research into radioactivity. Their dedication was extraordinary. They worked in a poorly equipped laboratory, often in dangerous conditions, handling radioactive materials without proper protection.
In 1898, the Curies discovered two new radioactive elements: polonium (named after Marie's homeland, Poland) and radium. This discovery revolutionized science and medicine. In 1903, Marie and Pierre, along with Henri Becquerel, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their research on radioactivity. Marie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
Tragedy struck in 1906 when Pierre was killed in a street accident. Devastated but determined, Marie continued their research alone. She took over Pierre's teaching position at the Sorbonne, becoming the first female professor there. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her discovery and isolation of pure radium. She remains the only person to have won Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields.
During World War I, Marie developed mobile X-ray units, called "petites Curies," to help treat wounded soldiers on the battlefield. She personally drove these units to the front lines, demonstrating remarkable courage and dedication to helping others.
Marie Curie died on July 4, 1934, from aplastic anemia, likely caused by prolonged exposure to radiation. Her legacy, however, lives on. She broke barriers for women in science, made discoveries that transformed medicine and physics, and inspired countless scientists. Her life story exemplifies perseverance, dedication, and the pursuit of knowledge against all odds.
